The National Football League (NFL) is the league for American football. The preseason begins in August, and the regular season ends in January. Playoffs begin after the regular season ends, with the Super Bowl, or championship game, happening in early February. Within the NFL, there are two conferences: the National Football Conference, and the American Football Conference.
America’s professional basketball league is called the NBA, or National Basketball Association. The NBA is built up of 30 teams, 29 in the US and one in Canada, with games happening from October to April. The championship game is held in early May every year, with playoff games starting mid-April.
Major League Baseball (MLB) was founded in 1869, making it the oldest professional sports league in the United States. The season starts in spring, with spring training games being played before the regular season starts. Baseball winds down with the end of summer in August, and postseason playoff games follow. Similar to the NFL, the MLB is split into two leagues: the National League and the American League. Not only do they have major league teams, 30 in total, but they also have over 200-minor league teams.
The National Hockey League, also known as the NHL, starts its season in October, and winds down in April, with postseason games taking place in May, and ending with the Stanley Cup. 30 teams make up the league, 23 of them located in the U.S. and seven of them in Canada.
The NASCAR season, or National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing, is a little different from the others on this list. Regular season races start in February and end in September or October. NASCAR was founded in 1948 and is the largest associated of racers in the U.S.
